Vega Reservoir was constructed in 1962 to meet the increasing demands for irrigation in the Plateau Valley. When construction of the aquifer finished, the Bureau of Reclamation transferred management of the property to the State of Colorado and it officially became a State Park.
Built around the lake's primary function of irrigation, Vega State Park boasts a bounty of recreational activities at its campgrounds. With four campgrounds open from Fall to Spring, visitors can enjoy fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, birding, hiking, or exploring vast ATV trails on the surrounding Grand Mesa National Forest. One campground remains open for the Winter months, when visitors can enjoy ice fishing and snowmobile riding.
Vega State Park is managed by Colorado Parks & Wildlife, whose governing mission statement found at cpw.state.co.us is "to manage wildlife, maintain a quality state parks system and provide outdoor recreation opportunities for our residents and visitors. We are charged with balancing conservation of our wildlife and habitat with recreational needs, both synonymous with our state. Our hunting, angling and state parks customers are critical to the funding that helps keep our wildlife and wild spaces healthy."
